Common questions and direct answers before you book.
Questions about air ducts, dryer vents, bird nests, chimneys, odor treatment, water cleanup, service areas, and estimates.
Which service should I request?+
Choose the closest match and describe what you are noticing. We can clarify the starting point when we follow up.
Can I receive an estimate before scheduling?+
Yes. Some work can be estimated from details and photos; other conditions require an on-site inspection.
Do you provide before-and-after photos?+
When the area can be photographed safely and meaningfully, we document representative conditions and completed work.
Do you remove bird nests from vents?+
We assess the vent, access, and whether wildlife is active. Accessible nesting material can often be removed when lawful and appropriate.
Do you offer mold remediation?+
We provide cleaning and can discuss antimicrobial treatment where appropriate. Significant or confirmed mold remediation may require a separately qualified provider.
Can you treat cigarette smoke or pet odors?+
We can assess smoke, cigarette, pet, and other persistent odors. The plan may involve source removal, cleaning, deodorizing products, or controlled fogging; results depend on the affected materials and underlying source.
Do you handle water damage outside a basement?+
Yes. Appropriate clean-water events can affect basements, living areas, and other finished floors. We can assess extraction, removal of approved wet materials, cleaning, optional treatment, and controlled drying. Sewage, electrical hazards, major structural damage, contaminated floodwater, and regulated remediation require a specialized provider.
How do I know if my dryer vent is blocked?+
Long drying times, unusual heat, weak exterior airflow, lint buildup, odor, or visible nesting material are common warning signs.
Do you service chimneys and fireplaces?+
Yes. We assess the accessible condition and explain the recommended cleaning or next step before work is approved.
What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 chimney inspection?+
A Level 1 inspection covers readily accessible visual areas and is priced at $199. A Level 2 inspection is more extensive, includes additional accessible areas, rooftop access when safe, and internal flue video scanning when applicable; it is priced at $350. Cleaning and repairs are separate.
Do you repair chimney brick, mortar, and crowns?+
We can assess damaged brick, deteriorated mortar joints, cracked crowns, and sections that may require partial reconstruction. The recommended work depends on condition, height, access, materials, and any local permit or qualified-trade requirements.
What areas do you serve?+
Blue Steel LLC serves Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, subject to appointment availability.
When should air ducts be cleaned?+
There is no single schedule that fits every home. Visible buildup, pests or nesting, debris after renovation, persistent odors, and findings inside accessible HVAC components are reasons to request an inspection. We recommend work based on the observed condition rather than an automatic interval.
Does air duct cleaning cure allergies or guarantee better health?+
No. We do not make medical or health guarantees. Cleaning can remove buildup from accessible system surfaces, but indoor air also depends on moisture, filtration, outdoor air, pets, housekeeping, and other sources.
What does a thorough air duct cleaning process involve?+
The exact method depends on access and system design. A typical plan can include protecting the work area, establishing collection or negative pressure, mechanically loosening buildup, cleaning approved accessible components, and documenting representative results.
Should antimicrobial products always be applied after cleaning?+
No. Treatment is optional and should only be discussed after the source, affected material, moisture condition, product label, and proposed application area are understood. It does not replace physical cleaning or moisture correction.
How often should dryer vent ductwork be cleaned?+
The U.S. Fire Administration advises cleaning dryer vent ductwork annually. Heavy use, long vent runs, multiple bends, weak airflow, unusual heat, or longer drying times can justify earlier inspection.
How often should a chimney be inspected?+
The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends an annual chimney inspection, with cleaning performed as needed based on use, buildup, access, and condition.
Do chemical chimney-cleaning products replace an inspection or sweeping?+
No. A log or chemical product cannot confirm the condition of the flue, identify nesting or damage, or physically remove every type of deposit. An appropriate inspection remains the starting point.
How long does an air duct cleaning appointment take?+
There is no honest one-size-fits-all duration. The number of HVAC systems, registers and returns, system layout, access, buildup, equipment setup, and any approved component cleaning all affect the schedule. We review those details before confirming the expected working time.
Do I need to prepare my home before air duct cleaning?+
Please provide clear access to the furnace or air handler, supply registers, returns, thermostat, and any agreed work areas. Move fragile items and valuables away from those locations, secure pets, identify parking or building-access restrictions, and tell us about sensitive occupants or known hazards before the visit.
Will air duct cleaning make a mess inside the house?+
The work should be planned to control loosened debris rather than release it into occupied rooms. We protect appropriate work areas, use collection or negative-pressure equipment when the approved method calls for it, and explain any access openings or unusual conditions before proceeding.
Should the blower, coil, and air handler be inspected too?+
Yes. Ducts are part of a larger HVAC system, and accessible components can affect overall cleanliness and performance. Inspection does not mean every component automatically needs cleaning; we explain what is accessible, what condition we observe, and what is included in the quoted work.
Can you clean flexible or internally lined ductwork?+
Sometimes, but the material and its condition determine the safe method. Damaged, wet, deteriorated, or mold-contaminated porous material may not be a good candidate for aggressive cleaning and may require repair, replacement, or separate specialist evaluation.
Will you show me why a service is being recommended?+
Yes. When the relevant area is safely accessible, we use inspection findings and representative photos to explain the condition. You can review the recommended work and price before approving additional service.
Why is my dryer still taking too long after the lint screen is cleaned?+
The restriction may be farther inside the transition hose, concealed duct run, exterior hood, or a section affected by crushing, excess bends, disconnection, or nesting. Appliance problems can create similar symptoms, so vent airflow and the visible route should be assessed before assuming the dryer itself is defective.
What should I do if the dryer or laundry room becomes unusually hot?+
Stop and check the lint screen, avoid repeatedly running an overheating appliance, and request an assessment of the dryer exhaust path. Unusual heat, a burning smell, poor airflow, or repeated long cycles should not be ignored; an appliance fault may also require a qualified appliance technician.
Can a bird nest be removed at any time of year?+
Not always. We first look for signs of active birds, eggs, or young and consider the vent location and applicable wildlife rules. If a nest cannot lawfully or safely be disturbed, we explain the next appropriate step rather than sealing an active animal inside.
What is included in a Level 1 chimney inspection?+
A Level 1 inspection is intended for a system that is readily accessible and whose use, appliance, fuel, and venting arrangement have not materially changed. It covers accessible portions viewed without destructive work. If the history, condition, access, or planned change calls for a more detailed evaluation, a higher inspection level may be recommended.
When might a Level 2 chimney inspection be appropriate?+
A Level 2 inspection may be appropriate after a property transfer, chimney fire or damaging event, a change in appliance or fuel, relining, or when a Level 1 finding needs additional evaluation. It can include additional accessible areas and internal video scanning where applicable; rooftop work is performed only when conditions and access are safe.
Does a chimney inspection automatically include cleaning or repairs?+
No. Inspection identifies visible conditions and the appropriate next step. Sweeping, camera scanning beyond the agreed level, caps, masonry, crowns, liners, waterproofing, and other repairs are separate unless they are specifically included in the written scope and price.
Can an HVAC UV light replace cleaning or filtration?+
No. A UV device is one possible system component; it does not remove dust, repair moisture problems, replace a correctly selected filter, or substitute for physical cleaning. Placement, lamp type, electrical requirements, maintenance, and safe shielding must be reviewed for the specific HVAC system.
How long does odor treatment take to work?+
It depends on the source and affected material. Odor treatment is most effective after the source and contaminated residue are removed. Smoke, pet urine, wet porous materials, and concealed contamination may require different cleaning, removal, drying, sealing, or specialist work, and no responsible provider should promise that every odor will disappear after one application.
